Waiting Years For Year Of The Shark, ⭐⭐⭐

 Year Of The Shark 2022 is a France 3 Cinema production. After waiting in eager anticipation for the past two years for an English translation of this movie, I gave up and bought the French/ German released DVD. Alas no English subtitles. I recently went on a bit about a Chinese film, Escape The Shark 2021 that had only been translated to Hindi from its original Cantonese or Mandarin. I was of the belief that with most sharksploitation production it didn't matter much what language it was in. Not so with this movie as its centered more on the heroes' journey than most shark movies. So, I watched it in its native tongue and feel there is some depth I am missing. Excellent cast, who apparently are better known in France for their comedic output, made following the central plot of this semiserious drama easy enough. The Shark attacks are sparse but each one counts in building tension and a resolute course of action for the protagonist. Although you shouldn't, you find yourself looking to the tropes that the Jaws franchise first espoused as hints that initially this maybe another homage to Jaws like, The Last Shark 1981. It isn't about the shark though; there's a decent little human drama happening here. Albeit at a slower pace, but that's part of this movies charm given its setting in a small French coastal town. I hope to rewatch this in English one day to see if my initial feelings hold.
