Early Reskinned Sharksploitation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Orca 1977, opens with a great white attack. So thats how it initially gets onto this sharksploitation blog. Its natural footage shot off the coast of Queensland by shark advocate Ron Taylor. The attack in the movie is in Newfoundland. But this scene is blended well and you just wouldn’t be able to tell. Not true however for the rest of the movies Orca scenes, Which were mainly shot in Marineland’s. But this is a Dino D Laurentiis production so you can be sure that a strict budgetary cash in was the driving motivation. However that shouldn’t cheapen your experience as the screenplay is well done. The plot is great. Not until Deep Blue Sea 1996 do we see another decent take on intelligence in our antagonists. Top that off with a revenge motive and this movie is compelling. Today the movie is eminently watchable for the human drama alone, you will need to get past the sometimes cringe worthy male machismo of the lead which was nearly stock behaviour on screen in the late seventies ( that’s 1970’s not the 1870’s ). I include this in Sharksploitation as since this movie was released so many of its themes and actions became standard fare for what was to follow. Studiocanal rereleases on DVD have seen this movie restored and digitalised and given the UHD 4 k treatment and are far better than what you will remember from that trip to the cinema 46 or so years ago and of course unless you are still hanging onto your old cathode ray telly.
