Why Shark Movies And Why This Blog.
Shark movies provide just the right amount of horror. I don't like body horror or excess protracted gore, torture, I can't even watch medical procedures. For me it's the building and holding of tension. I want to feel something other than the passive entertainment that other genre movies provide. With a good shark movie, you can live vicariously in the moment. Humor also plays a central part in the enjoyment as in case of bad acting, bad shark renderings, bad continuity, plot holes etc.
In the summer of 1975, there was Jaws. I was already a fan of monster movies and TV, but Jaws introduced me to true horror. I have since watched every shark movie I can. To date I own over 60 on DVD and thanks to channels like Utube and Tubi I have watched a dozen more. But I think it qualifies as an obsession when I can advise that most of the movies owned, I have watched at least twice. DVD's appeal to me because I'm a big fan of collecting the wholly exaggerated DVD slick art. Today there are more movies being released than I can keep track of. Couple this with the perceived decline in production and scripting values then a lot of new independent releases are being sidelined and have lost promotion potential. This means I am discovering new old movies all the time. As an Illustration of decline in value I cite, Shark Huntress.
I have based my blog ratings on how the movies make me feel in relation to what I felt way back then in that theatre in the summer of 1975.
There are plenty of knowledgeable people that can give a movie a good in-depth critique. But I do this blog for those that are going to watch a number of these movies for the same reason I watch them. So, you get from me how it made me feel, what new elements it may bring if you are as jaded as myself, hints at humorous content you need to see and just the central themes and things that may help you to look for something that is more you. Oh, and avoid Shark Huntress at all cost.
