Red Water the 2003 made for TV is a slow starter. Its narrative in the first half has us taking in four-characters stories, The Heroes, His Ex-wife's, The bad guys and then that of the Sharks. You can buy into the clear eyed and pure of heart antagonist hero, but it's harder to empathise with the ex-wife whose very job description makes her a kind of cookie cutter character. The bad guys are just the shark's fodder so don't expect much performance from them. The poor shark finds itself initially in a Jaws clone plot line which is disappointing because, OMG it's a wonderful looking rubberised animatronic shark. It’s used extensively and combined with minimal stock /CGI shark footage in support. When the story lines finally merge the movie moves into high gear and is engagingly action packed with some great ideas for getting people into the water with one of sharksploitation's finest animatronic nasties. Plenty of great shark moments here for the sharksploitation fans that make this movie worth wading through the first half.
