An Inconcise Guide To The Enjoyment Of Sharksploitation. Part 1.

To Qualify any hope of enjoying this genre you must,

1) Not expect the DVD slick to have any bearing on the movies content. Remember where marketing is involved, Over-size is compensation for underwhelming.

2) Not be averse to bikinis.

3) Not sweat the small stuff. Plot inconsistencies and continuity error spotting should be treated as a pastime within the genre.

4) Not be able to recognise any actors of note. In this genre they are normally on their way down the Hollywood ranking ladder and most likely are at or near the bottom. Conversely the younger ones are trying to get onto said ladder.

5) Not find yourself groaning, "Again with the super sharks aaaaagh".

6) Have a pathological need to see the movie to the very end. Extra credit if you watch the credits. I endure this by counting the number of production people with my surname. it's a serious FOMO issue.

7) Have an accountant's mind, it helps to count the number of victims, The number of boats destroyed, how many times the water is chummed. Sometimes in the case of the cheaper budgeted student movies this is all that differentiates some of the truly awful outings.

8) Try to watch it with someone else. Then you can exclaim at the appropriate moment, " He/she won't be in Shark Zombies Of The Appalachians 2 ". That joke never gets old. But it is getting harder to find people who will sit through a movie with me.

9) Think that Jaws is the best movie ever made. It will help you to see where the others rank behind this epic story telling. There is so much content online to support this statement, check it out.

10) Have a heightened sense of the absurd  to see where it takes you in the course of an average 80 minutes.

11) Try empathy for the shark(s), particularly if you feel the plot isn't doing it for you. It's much more engaging if you try to see it from the shark's point of view. I know this is not intentionally part of the director's vision. But try to think of it as some sort of unimagined subtext that only you get.
