Size Matters.
There is a tradition in sharksploitation that see’s the genres practitioners exaggerating the size of the Antagonist. Megalodons aside the artwork adorning the covers of our DVD slicks have seen sharks growing ever larger movie by movie. Slick art is no basis for reality in the movie, except strangely enough, the Sharknado series. But what will be the future direction as more sharksploitation movies are being churned out per annum than at any other time in its brief history? If recent trends continue then I think the story formula has to be, The bigger the shark the sillier the premise. We are also starting to see a growth in more serious-minded sharksploitation movies. These are garnering a good share of the ratings. These tend to keep the antagonist within the 6.096-metre range and have them behaving like real sharks, good examples are 47 Meters Down plus The Shallows. As the established movie industry is starting to decline and independents rise using the new technologies, anyone will be able to produce a convincing silly shark whopper.
