Do Over With Body Count As Side Project.
June 2023. I have always had this urge to do a count analysis for such elements as time until the first shark appearance/first attack. then add a body and boat/watercraft count per movie. I have this nagging feeling that if I could quantify this data then cross reference it with the box office earnings, I could see what people really want from sharksploitation. We'd need a lot of sample data though to make any reasonable assumptions given the vast subject matter. I mean how do you account for phenomena like Sharknado.
I have managed to watch 60+ Shark related movies in my time and a good 30% of them twice. I think its best if I rewatch the 10 big contenders again, according to the webpage, Work+ Money they are, The Meg, Jaws, Shark Tales (animated), Jaws 2, Deep Blue Sea, The Shallows, Jaws 3D, 47 meters down, Open Waters, Jaws The revenge.
OK, I'll dive in, watch this space.
Update. January 2026, I have now watched and made entries for over one hundred and fifty Sharksploitation movies and written twenty entries on its culture. The genre has exploded in all categories making a definitive statement on what people want from this genre impossible. It seems viewers are as diverse as the genre itself. Most Utubers and amateur reviewers watch purely to state that this was the worst movie ever made and to avoid it. I think they make up a distinct audience. Few seem to appreciate the hard work that goes into making even the most low brow offerings. The top, mainly Australian made movies, continue to do well with all audiences and remain in constant production year on year. Fear of the unknown and fear of an apex predator appears to be the universal key here. People readily invest ninety minutes to feel those aspects. The nagging feeling I could quantify has gone away now. I know that the genre will continue to surprise and delight me every now and then when I am least expecting it. That should and is enough.
